The Look of Our Log Home
The rendering below is an artist’s depiction of a similar log home to ours. This artwork was our starting point during the design and planning phase. We made many modifications, the story of which, is here: log home floor plan modifications.

Current Progress:
Coming soon:
Building a large retaining wall, building in a cold room (no infloor heating), adding a horizontal steel beam for support, installing floor joists, installing sub-floor (first floor) and laying the plywood, adding flashing to the sill, laying the first logs, mapping out the electrical units and more.
| Tuesday July 15th |
Built the south walls of the log home as well as one side of the foyer. |
| Eric Kleinoder, Laura Childs | |

| Monday July 14th |
Started building walls now that the outlets and electrical is worked out. Also discovered that steel support beams must be primed and painted before installation! |

| Sunday July 13th |
And on the seventh day they were too darn tired to work! Eric and I both took a day off! Well, Eric did other work - I stayed home and baked pies. |

| Saturday July 12th |
It’s been three days since I updated this. All the days blending into one now. We’re so tired. I can’t for the life of me remember what we did on Saturday! Other than, of course, cut and place logs, check the level, made sure everything was square, and screw them into place with 12″ log bolts. |
| Eric Kleinoder, Laura Childs | |
| ——————————————————————– | |
| Friday July 11th |
Cutting logs, checking level, chiseling out the joints, adding gasket, screwing them down…cutting logs, checking…over and over again. |
| Eric Kleinoder, Laura Childs | |
| ——————————————————————– | |
| Wednesday July 9th |
We finished working on the sub-floor and awaited Gord Trolley from Freymond Lumber. Lucille and Ildaco brought lunch at noon! Around 5 or 6 pm the logs arrived! (see video and photos of log home arriving here) |

| Saturday July 5th |
Yesterday, today and on Sunday we worked through adding floor joists, supporting sills for the first course of logs, and the sub-floor. We also adding flashing to the edge of the sill (it’s building code here in Ontario). |

| Week of June 25-July 4 |
This week has all been about building the retaining walls within the basement. These two walls enclose the mechanical room, the ‘roughed-in’ bathroom and the cold room. |

Eric firms up our order with Freymond Lumber! This is exciting as we personally know the owner and the staff at Freymond’s - we couldn’t be in better hands. |

| Friday May 30th |
Eric and Ben spend the day at the building site making final adjustments to the forms, and waiting on the concrete truck. Although he’d scheduled for 4:30pm, Ben and Eric were finished their work long before noon, and our concrete company was very accommodating - switching their own schedules around to ensure a more suitable delivery time. Excellent service! |

Hoping both the building inspector and the architect can be reached today. Need to place the order for Logix blocks by Friday before the prices jump dramatically - as well as confirm order with log suppliers to ensure smooth timing. And…know that our footings are fine or make the necessary steps to correct them! As luck would have it both of these people did contact me today and we are set to go. |

Discovered that it is nearly impossible to track down our building inspector on any day other than Monday - she’s just too busy and too much work on her plate. Monday is the only day she is employed by Carlow/Mayo Township. Perhaps if Carlow/Mayo charged the same amount per square foot as the rest of Ontario’s neighbouring region, we could have a building inspector in the area more than 4 times per month. Carlow/Mayo $.60 square foot. Faraday Township and surrounding area - $.75 square foot. |

Discovered that our forms (for footings) were perhaps not approved by our Building Inspector - as there is no stamp of approval. An initial was expected, if there was a problem, a note would have been nice, but nothing - so we’re in limbo… |
