Log Home, Log Cabin, or Log House?
First off, let me explain why sometimes I call our upcoming build a “log cabin” from time to time…
I recently ran across a magazine that referred to log homes and houses that were under 3,000 square feet as cabins. Hmmm, unless you have more than 3 children, in-laws living with you, more money than you need, or no worries over paying for non-renewable resources today – do you really need more than 3,000 square feet in your home?
Sure it’s nice to have, but this is more to clean, more to heat, higher building costs (even the permits are based on square footage), and eventually, as families continue to shrink in size, harder to sell 5-10 years down the road.
I personally don’t see my new home as being a “cabin” – since it will be our family home, year round.
The home will have a partially finished, high and dry basement, 2 large bedrooms, and 2 full bathrooms. My large office will be in the basement by the walk-out to pasture and overlooking the horses running in the fields. The ‘log cabin’ will be constructed for all weather and temperatures, truly year-round living. Not a cabin in the woods retreat.
On the other hand, it does sound a less intimidating to say we’re building a log cabin home, rather than a full blown, acre-sprawling, custom-designed log house – but if you follow trends in magazines it’s a cabin by design.
I’m excited to share this with you, my online friends, as this website will be a journey of discovery. I’m glad you’re a part of it and welcome your comments along the way!
See you soon, Laura
